Minutes of a Meeting of the SPG on Tuesday 18th October 2016
The meeting, organised by Chris Wright convened at the recently opened Haveli Indian restaurant on the Broadway in Darras Hall at 7pm.
Those present were, in around table order, David Robinson, Maureen Angus, David Appleton, Chris Wright, Kath Wright, Brian Angus, Adrian Morley and Mary-Clare Robinson. Apologies had been received from Catherine Ashcroft on behalf of Tom and Margaret Ashcroft who had just moved into a new McCarthy and Stone apartment near the Town Moor, and were settling in. James Henry had just that day completed his last diet of supervision of national FRCPath exams at Gateshead (QE Hospital) and also apologised for his absence.
The normal lively debate and discussion took place. As so often the poetry of Robert Burns arose as a piece called “Epitaph” by the Bard which had been recited at Brian’s father’s recent funeral. The poem was also recited at Alec’s funeral. This had been written for William Muir by Burns. The text of this short poem is reproduced below and is also attached as a spoken piece supplied by David Appleton
“Epitaph on my own friend, and my father's friend, William Muir in Tarbolton”
An honest man here lies at rest
As e'er God with his image blest.
The friend of man, the friend of truth;
The friend of Age, and guide of Youth:
Few hearts like his with virtue warm'd,
Few heads with knowledge so inform'd:
If there's another world, he lives in bliss;
If there is none, he made the best of this.

Haveli proved to be a lavish and elegant restaurant, matched by excellent Indian Cuisine in a very modern style. Members very much enjoyed the dinner and would recommend it to their friends.
David A has determined that the next ordinary meeting of the SPG will be on Wednesday 16th November and, as we all agreed, this will be at the Gosforth Hotel in Gosforth (8pm). Parking had been predicted to be a problem but it is rumoured that this is not the case; our experiment may shed light on this, and hopefully there will be no problems.
Many thanks to Brian for producing these minutes. |
